Skip Hire Frequently Asked Questions

What can you put in a skip?

You can put a range of items into your skip no matter the skip size. This includes:

  • Garden waste
  • Household waste
  • Scrap metal
  • Soil
  • Bricks
  • General dry waste
  • Wood
  • Plastic
  • Rubble
  • Paper
  • Concrete
  • Mattresses

What can’t you put in a skip?

The following items we do not accept in our skips

  • Batteries
  • Clinical or medical waste
  • Electrical appliances
  • Fluorescent tubes
  • Fridges, freezers and air conditioning units
  • Gas bottles
  • Hazardous & toxic materials
  • Liquids (Oil, Petrol, Diesel)
  • Paint & Cans of paint
  • Tyres
  • TVs & computer screens

We always recommend that you call us if you have items like these that you need to dispose of and we can discuss the most appropriate way to remove.

What size skip should I hire?

This will primarily depend on the amount of waste and space you have to place a skip.  We offer the following sizes:

  • 4-yard skip
  • 6-yard Small ‘Builder’s Skip’
  • 8 Yard Big ‘Builder’s Skip’
  • 12 Yard Skip

Do I need a skip license?

If you are going to put a skip on a highway or private street we have a responsibility to obtain a skip license for you. This isn’t needed if it is on a private road where the public have no right of access.

Can you help load the skip?

The skip hire service covers the delivery and removal of the skip, no labour is included. If you require help you may prefer to use our rubbish clearance service – load and go.

How long can I hire a skip for?

The price of a skip normally covers hire for up to 2 weeks.  Collection date is flexible. You can either specify when you want the skip collected at the time of hire, or request a collection later once you know a bit more.

Is there a weight limit on the amount you can put in a skip?

There is a limit and as a reference see below. The only time we’ve seen a household go over the weight limit is when it’s been wrongly filled with soil, bricks, sand and rubble.

Skip size Bin bags Max weight
4 Yard 30-40 4 Tonnes
6 Yard 50-60 6 Tonnes
8 Yard 60-80 8 Tonnes
10 Yard 80-100 8 Tonnes
12 Yard 100-120 8 Tonnes

Remember that you need to fill the skip below the height of the sides. Overloaded skips are dangerous to move and waste can fall onto the road which can cause injury and damage.

Where does my waste go?

Waste from the skip or our vans is tipped at a licenced commercial waste transfer station. It is first picked through by hand and larger items of wood, metal, cardboard and packaging are removed.  Smaller items and waste are put through a picking line and machines to further separate materials.

A trommel rotates removing soil from the pile.  At the end of the line there should be just clean hardcore left which is later crunched so it can be reused in construction.

Wood is chipped and sent for biomass energy.

Cardboard and paper are sent to UK paper mills where they are washed and recycled into new card or paper products.

Metal is sent away to smelters and is recycled into new metals.

Plastics are separated into their categories balled and recycled.

Non-recyclable residual waste is baled and sent to an energy from waste facility.

Roupcycle only use waste transfer stations that are dedicated to working towards 100% landfill diversion.
